Historical context

Septimius Severus ruled as Roman emperor from 193 to 211, securing supreme authority following the death of Pertinax in the Year of the Five Emperors. After overcoming rivals and campaigning extensively in the east and across the Roman frontiers, he established imperial governance alongside his second wife, Julia Domna, and their sons Caracalla and Geta, forming the Severan dynasty.

Produced at the mint of Rome, this silver coin is a denarius, the standard Roman silver denomination originally introduced during the Second Punic War. The issue features Julia Domna on the obverse with the inscription "IVLIA AVGVSTA", while the reverse displays Diana draped with a crescent on her neck, carrying a transverse torch in both hands, accompanied by the legend "DIANA LVCIFERA".
