Historical context
After eliminating rival claimants and consolidating control across the empire, he governed alongside his family, having two sons, Caracalla and Geta, with his second wife, Julia Domna.
Struck at the mint of Rome, this silver coin represents the denarius, which served as the standard Roman silver coin from c. 211 BC until the reign of Gordian III. Issued under the authority of Septimius Severus, the piece honours Julia Domna with the obverse inscription "IVLIA AVGVSTA". The reverse depicts the goddess Juno holding a patera and sceptre, accompanied by a peacock at her feet, paired with the legend "IVNO REGINA".
