Historical context

Together with his second wife, Julia Domna, Severus established the Severan dynasty. Their two sons, Caracalla and Geta, were elevated to the rank of Augustus in 198 and 209 respectively, eventually succeeding Severus under the counsel of Julia Domna.

Produced at the mint of Rome, this silver denarius formed part of the standard Roman silver coinage that had circulated since the Second Punic War. The coin features Julia Domna, bearing the obverse legend "IVLIA AVGVSTA". The reverse depicts her towered as Cybele, seated in a quadriga drawn by lions and holding a branch, accompanied by the inscription "MATER AVGG".
