Historical context

Septimius Severus ruled as Roman emperor from 193 until 211, seizing power during the Year of the Five Emperors following the death of Pertinax. Born in Leptis Magna, he consolidated his rule across the Roman Empire and founded the Severan dynasty. His second wife was Julia Domna, with whom he had two sons, Caracalla and Geta, who both became co-emperors before succeeding their father.

This gold aureus was produced at the Rome mint under the authority of Septimius Severus. The obverse depicts Julia Domna with the legend "IVLIA AVGVSTA", while the reverse portrays Pietas sacrificing at an altar, accompanied by the inscription "PIETAS AVGG".
