Historical context

Septimius Severus ruled as Roman emperor from 193 until his death in 211, establishing the Severan dynasty. Having secured supreme power in the Year of the Five Emperors following the death of Pertinax, he consolidated control across the Roman Empire alongside his second wife, Julia Domna, and their two sons, Caracalla and Geta.

Struck at the Rome mint, this silver denarius formed part of the standard Roman silver coinage that circulated from the Second Punic War until the reign of Gordian III. The issue features Julia Domna on the obverse, accompanied by the inscription IVLIA AVGVSTA, while the reverse depicts Pietas veiled at an altar with raised hands, designated by the legend PIETAS PVBLICA.
