Historical context

Lucius Septimius Severus ruled as Roman emperor from 193 to 211, establishing the Severan dynasty following the Year of the Five Emperors. Married to his second wife, Julia Domna, Severus conducted campaigns across the empire, including in the east, Africa, and Britain, before dying at Eboracum in 211. He elevated their sons to co-rulers, creating a dynastic succession in which Julia Domna served as an advisor.

Struck at Rome under the authority of Septimius Severus, this silver denarius represents the standard Roman silver coin denomination that served from c. 211 BC into the third century AD. The piece names the empress on the obverse as "IVLIA AVGVSTA", depicting her draped bust. The reverse carries the legend "SAECVLI FELICITAS" alongside imagery of Isis, who wears a peaked head-dress, rests her foot on a prow, and nurses the infant Horus beside an altar and rudder.
