Historical context
Septimius Severus ruled as Roman emperor from 193 to 211, emerging victorious from the Year of the Five Emperors following the death of Pertinax. To secure dynastic succession, he proclaimed his elder son Caracalla as co-emperor in 198, later elevating his younger son Geta in 209. Coins struck at the mint of Rome during Severus's reign frequently reflected this dynastic partnership, depicting the emperor alongside his designated imperial heirs.
