Historical context

Lucius Septimius Severus ruled as Roman emperor from 193 until his death in 211, securing the imperial throne during the Year of the Five Emperors following the demise of Pertinax. Originally from Leptis Magna in Africa, he established the Severan dynasty with his second wife, Julia Domna, and their two sons, Caracalla and Geta.

Produced under the authority of Septimius Severus at the mint of Rome, this bronze as portrays Julia Domna, who advised her sons upon their succession. The obverse features her draped bust accompanied by the legend "IVLIA AVGVSTA". The reverse displays the goddess Venus, draped and holding an apple while drawing drapery from her left shoulder, framed by the inscription "VENVS FELIX S C".
