Historical context
Trajan Decius ruled the Roman Empire from 249 until June 251. Formerly a politician under Philip the Arab, Decius was proclaimed emperor by his troops following the suppression of a rebellion in Moesia. He defeated and killed Philip near Verona in 249, after which the Senate recognised him as emperor. His reign ended when he and his co-ruler son were killed fighting the Goths at the Battle of Abritus.
Struck at Rome, this silver coin is an antoninianus, a denomination introduced by Caracalla in 215 and thought to have been valued at two denarii. The radiate crown worn by the emperor on the obverse indicated a double denomination. Amid ongoing debasement and shortages of bullion, soldier emperors produced such coinage to pay troops and secure loyalty. The reverse bears the legend "ABVNDANTIA AVG" alongside the figure of Abundantia emptying a cornucopia, while the obverse names the emperor as "IMP C M Q TRAIANVS DECIVS AVG".
