Historical context

Trajan Decius, born Gaius Messius Quintus Trajanus Decius, was Roman emperor from 249 to 251. Formerly a politician under Philip the Arab, he was proclaimed emperor by troops after quelling a revolt in Moesia. He defeated and killed Philip near Verona in 249, subsequently receiving recognition from the Senate. Decius focused on strengthening the Roman state and religion until he was killed by the Goths in June 251.

Struck at the Rome mint, this bronze as was issued under the imperial authority of Trajan Decius. The obverse presents his laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust, accompanied by the inscription "IMP C M Q TRAIANVS DECIVS AVG". The reverse depicts the figure of Liberalitas standing with an abacus and a cornucopiae, framed by the legend "LIBERALITAS AVG S C".
