Historical context

Trajan Decius served as Roman emperor from 249 until 251, having been proclaimed emperor by his troops after suppressing a rebellion in Moesia. After defeating Philip the Arab near Verona, Decius received recognition from the Senate. During his rule, he sought to strengthen the Roman state and its religion, and he co-ruled with his son Herennius Etruscus until both were killed by the Goths in June 251.

Struck at the Rome mint under the authority of Trajan Decius, this bronze double sestertius features Herennia Etruscilla. The obverse depicts her diademed and draped bust set on a crescent, accompanied by the inscription HERENNIA ETRVSCILLA AVG. The reverse design presents Pudicitia, draped and veiled, seated while drawing her veil and holding a sceptre, flanked by the inscription PVDICITIA AVG S C.
