Historical context

Trajan Decius ruled as Roman emperor from 249 to 251, having been proclaimed emperor by his soldiers after suppressing a revolt in Moesia. He defeated and killed his predecessor, Philip the Arab, near Verona in 249 before receiving recognition from the Senate. During his rule, Decius sought to strengthen the Roman state and its religion, and later governed alongside his son Herennius Etruscus.

Struck at the Rome mint under the authority of Trajan Decius, this bronze sestertius features Herennia Etruscilla. In Roman imperial currency, the sestertius was a coin used in commerce, representing a quarter of a denarius. The obverse depicts a diademed, draped bust of Herennia Etruscilla with the legend HERENNIA ETRVSCILLA AVG. The reverse displays Pudicitia, draped and veiled, seated while drawing her veil and carrying a sceptre, accompanied by the inscription PVDICITIA AVG S C.
