Sestertius in bronze struck at Rome under Hostilian, AD 251, catalogued as RIC IV Trajan Decius 224. Obverse: Bust of Hostilian, laureate, draped, cuirassed, right.

Reverse: Salus, draped, standing left, feeding out of right hand snake coiled around altar and holding sceptre in left hand. Obverse legend: IMP CAE C VAL HOS MES QVINTVS AVG. Reverse legend: SALVS AVGVS S C.

Historical context

Hostilian was elevated to caesar in 250 by his father, Decius. Following the deaths of Decius and his brother Herennius Etruscus at the Battle of Abritus in 251, the legions proclaimed Trebonianus Gallus emperor, who promptly elevated Hostilian to co-emperor before Hostilian died later that year. This large brass sestertius, a denomination representing one quarter of a denarius, was struck in Rome during Hostilian's brief reign in 251.
