Historical context

Trajan Decius ruled the Roman Empire from 249 to 251. Proclaimed emperor by his troops following the suppression of a rebellion in Moesia, he defeated Philip the Arab near Verona in 249 before being recognised by the Senate. During the final year of his reign, Decius co-ruled alongside his son Herennius Etruscus, until both were killed by the Goths at the Battle of Abritus.

Struck at the Rome mint, this silver antoninianus was a denomination introduced under Caracalla and valued at two denarii. On issues depicting imperial women, such as Herennia Etruscilla with the legend "HER ETRVSCILLA AVG", the bust traditionally rested upon a crescent moon. The reverse displays Fecunditas with a child and a cornucopiae, accompanied by the inscription "FECVNDITAS AVGG".
