Historical context

Trajan Decius ruled the Roman Empire from 249 to 251. Formerly a politician under Philip the Arab, he was proclaimed emperor by troops after quelling a rebellion in Moesia, subsequently defeating Philip near Verona. His reign focused on strengthening the Roman state and religion. He later co-ruled with his son Herennius Etruscus until both were killed by the Goths in the Battle of Abritus in June 251.

Struck at the Rome mint under Decius's authority, this silver antoninianus was a denomination introduced in 215 AD and valued at two denarii. Issues depicting an emperor's wife featured the female bust resting upon a crescent moon, as seen here with Herennia Etruscilla alongside the obverse legend "HER ETRVSCILLA AVG". The reverse depicts Pudicitia drawing her veil and holding a sceptre, accompanied by the inscription "PVDICITIA AVG".
