Historical context

Trajan Decius ruled as Roman emperor from 249 to 251, having been proclaimed by his troops in Moesia and subsequently recognised by the Senate after defeating Philip the Arab near Verona. During his reign, Decius sought to strengthen the Roman state and its religion, and later co-ruled with his son Herennius Etruscus until both were killed fighting the Goths at the Battle of Abritus.

Struck at Mediolanum, this silver antoninianus belongs to a denomination introduced by Caracalla in 215 AD and valued at two denarii. The issue commemorates the deified emperor Severus Alexander, featuring the obverse inscription "DIVO ALEXANDRO" alongside a radiate bust, a characteristic feature denoting a double denomination. The reverse carries the legend "CONSECRATIO" and depicts an eagle standing front on a bar with open wings.
