Historical context

The denomination is an antoninianus, also known as a pre-reform radiate, which was introduced by Caracalla in early AD 215 and thought to have been valued at two denarii. Characterised by the emperor wearing a radiate crown to denote a double denomination, the antoninianus was initially struck in silver but was progressively debased as silver bullion supplies declined and soldier emperors required coin to pay their troops. The reverse features Annona holding a rudder and corn-ears, accompanied by the inscription "ANNONA AVGG".
