Historical context

This silver antoninianus was produced between AD 251 and AD 253 under Emperor Trebonianus Gallus at Mediolanum, an important Roman city in Northern Italy that had earlier served as an informal capital of the Western Roman Empire. Over the third century, these coins were produced in vast quantities to meet imperial expenditure, suffering progressive debasement.
