Historical context

The antoninianus was introduced as a Roman coin denomination by Caracalla in early 215 AD, characterised by the radiate crown worn by the emperor. By the time Trebonianus Gallus ruled from AD 251 to AD 253, Roman silver coinage suffered from dwindling bullion supplies, with soldier emperors continually issuing debased coin to pay troops. This piece was struck at the Roman mint of Mediolanum in Northern Italy, which had been captured by the Romans in 222 BC.
