Historical context

Lucius Julius Aurelius Sulpicius Severus Uranius Antoninus was a Roman usurper active in Syria during the early 250s AD. Coins bearing his name were minted in Emesa, where he invoked the local deity Sol Invictus; some scholars link him to an Emesan priest of this era named Sampsiceramus. If placed in this later period, Uranius may have assisted in defending the Roman Empire against Shapur I, the Sassanid king of Persia. Aurei served as the primary gold denomination of the Roman world from the 1st century BC until being supplanted by the solidus in the early 4th century AD.
