Aureus in gold struck at Emisa under Uranius Antoninus, AD 253–AD 254, catalogued as RIC IV Uranius Antoninus 3a. Obverse: Bust of Uranius Antoninus, laureate, draped, cuirassed, right.

Reverse: Fortuna (?), draped, standing left, holding rudder in right hand and cornucopiae in left hand. Obverse legend: L IVL AVR SVLP VRA ANTONINVS. Reverse legend: FECVNDITAS AVG.

Historical context

Lucius Julius Aurelius Sulpicius Severus Uranius Antoninus was a Roman usurper active in Syria during the early 250s AD. Known from coins minted in Emesa (modern Homs, Syria) bearing his name, he may have aided the Roman Empire against Shapur I, the Sassanid king of Persia. His gold issues took the form of the aureus, the principal gold coin of ancient Rome from the first century BC until the early fourth century AD.
