Historical context

Gaius Vibius Volusianus served as Roman emperor from 251 to 253, reigning alongside his father, Trebonianus Gallus. Elevated to caesar following the deaths of Decius and Herennius Etruscus in June 251, Volusianus was made augustus later that year after the death of Hostilian. Their joint rule ended in August 253 when both emperors were killed by their own troops as the usurper Aemilian advanced towards Rome.

Produced at the mint of Rome, this silver antoninianus was a denomination thought to have been valued at two denarii. The radiate crown worn by the emperor on the obverse indicates this double denomination. The reverse depicts Pietas veiled and raising both hands beside an altar, paired with the legend "PIETAS AVGG". During this period of the Roman Empire, soldier emperors frequently required coinage to pay military forces and retain their loyalty amidst ongoing conflict.
