Historical context

Volusian ruled as Roman emperor alongside his father Trebonianus Gallus from 251 until August 253, having been elevated first to caesar and then to augustus following the death of Hostilian. Their short reign was beset by plague, hostilities with the Goths and the Sasanian Empire, and ended when they were killed by their own soldiers. This silver antoninianus was produced between AD 251 and AD 253 at Mediolanum, an important Roman urban centre in Northern Italy that had originally been conquered by the Romans in 222 BC.
