Historical context

Volusian served as Roman emperor from 251 to 253 alongside his father, Trebonianus Gallus, who had elevated him from caesar to augustus following the death of Hostilian. Their brief joint rule was marked by plague and military conflicts with both the Goths and the Sasanian Empire before their deaths in August 253. Mediolanum, an important Roman city in northern Italy, produced coinage including the antoninianus, a denomination first created by Caracalla in 215.
