Historical context
Gaius Vibius Volusianus was Roman emperor from 251 to 253, reigning alongside his father Trebonianus Gallus. Elevated to augustus following the death of Hostilian in July or August 251, Volusianus governed during a turbulent period marked by plague and conflicts with the Goths and the Sasanian Empire. This antoninianus, a coin type introduced under Caracalla in 215 AD, was struck in Antioch, the capital of Roman Syria. The joint reign ended in August 253 when Volusianus and his father were killed by their own soldiers amid the advance of the usurper Aemilian.
