Historical context

Volusian, formally Gaius Vibius Afinius Gallus Veldumnianus Volusianus, ruled the Roman Empire alongside his father Trebonianus Gallus from 251 until August 253. Following the death of Hostilian in mid-251, Volusian was elevated to co-emperor with the rank of augustus. Their brief joint administration faced external conflicts with the Sasanian Empire and the Goths, as well as an outbreak of plague, before both rulers were killed by their soldiers in 253.

Struck at the Rome mint, this bronze sestertius represents a denomination traditionally utilised as a large base-metal coin valued in commerce at one quarter of a denarius. The obverse presents Volusian with imperial titles under the legend IMP CAE C VIB VOLVSIANO AVG. The reverse design depicts a round distyle temple housing a seated figure of Juno, accompanied by the inscription IVNONI MARTIALI S C.
