Historical context

This silver coin was produced under the Roman Empire for the authority of Allectus at the Camulodunum mint.

The denomination is an antoninianus, a pre-reform radiate coin originally introduced under Caracalla in early AD 215 and thought to have been valued at two denarii. Such coins were utilised as imperial currency, serving to pay troops and secure allegiance during periods when soldier emperors and usurpers required vast quantities of coin. On this piece, the radiate crown indicates the double denomination. The reverse design depicts Providentia standing draped with a cornucopiae, a baton, and a globe at her feet, accompanied by the inscription PROVIDENTIA AVG.
