Historical context

This silver coin was issued under the authority of Allectus within the Roman Empire, from the mint at Camulodunum. The obverse bears his bust and names him with the legend IMP C ALLECTVS AVG.

Struck as a quinarius, the piece represents a denomination originally introduced alongside the silver sestertius after the denarius appeared in 211 BC. Historically valued at half a denarius, the quinarius was reintroduced in 101 BC to replace the victoriatus and continued to be produced sporadically into the third century. On this issue, the reverse design depicts a galley with a varying number of rowers, accompanied by the inscription LAETITIA AVG.
