Historical context
This silver coin was produced under the authority of Allectus within the Roman Empire, which spanned from 27 BC to AD 476. It was minted at Camulodunum, bearing obverse portraits of the ruler alongside the imperial legend IMP C ALLECTVS P F AVG.
Struck as a quinarius, the piece belongs to a denomination originally established as a small silver coin valued at half a denarius. First struck following the introduction of the denarius in 211 BC, the denomination was later reintroduced in 101 BC to replace the victoriatus and continued to be produced sporadically until the 3rd century. On this issue, the reverse portrays a galley with a varying number of rowers, accompanied by the inscription VIRTVS AVG.
