Historical context
This silver quinarius was issued under the authority of Allectus within the Roman Empire, bearing the mint mark of Camulodunum. The issue falls within the broader imperial period between 27 BC and AD 476. The obverse depicts the bust of Allectus, radiate and cuirassed, facing right, accompanied by the inscription "IMP C ALLECTVS P AVG".
The quinarius was a small Roman silver denomination valued at half a denarius. Originally introduced in 211 BC and valued at 5 asses, it was later reintroduced in 101 BC at a tariff of 8 asses to replace the victoriatus, remaining in sporadic production until the 3rd century. On this issue from Camulodunum, the reverse features a galley sailing right or left with a varying number of rowers and a steersman standing aft, paired with the legend "VIRTVS AVG".
