Historical context

Although initially silver, the denomination suffered progressive debasement throughout the third century AD as soldier emperors and usurpers required money to pay troops, eventually becoming almost entirely bronze by the late third century. This coin was issued under the authority of Allectus at Londinium, an important port and commercial centre that served as the capital of Roman Britain.
