Historical context

This silver coin was struck at the mint of Londinium under the authority of Allectus during the Roman Imperial period.

The coin is an antoninianus, a denomination introduced in early AD 215 by Caracalla as a double denomination valued at two denarii. Characterised by the depiction of the emperor wearing a radiate crown, the denomination was struck to pay troops and maintain loyalty amid silver shortages. Its reverse design depicts Providentia holding a baton and cornucopiae, accompanied by a globe at her feet, and bears the reverse legend "PROVI AVG", "PROVID AVG", or "PROVIDENTIA AVG".
