Historical context

This antoninianus was struck at the Londinium mint under the authority of Allectus within the Roman Empire. The denomination, introduced by Caracalla in early 215 AD, was thought to have been valued at two denarii and was originally a double denomination distinguished by the emperor wearing a radiate crown.

Over the course of the third century, the antoninianus experienced severe debasement from silver down to bronze with minimal silver content as silver supplies dwindled and successive rulers required coin to pay troops. On this issue, the obverse bears the portrait of Allectus with the inscription "IMP C ALLECTVS P F AVG", while the reverse depicts the draped figure of Felicitas holding a caduceus and a cornucopiae, accompanied by variants of the legend reading "TEMPOR FELICI", "TEMPORVM FELICI", "TEMPOR FELICITAS", or "TEMPORVM FELICITAS".
