Historical context

This silver coin was produced under the authority of Allectus within the Roman Empire, which spanned from 27 BC to AD 476. The issue originated from the mint at Londinium. Allectus is named on the obverse legend as IMP C ALLECTVS P F AVG, accompanied by his radiate portrait presented with drapery, cuirass, or both.

Struck as a quinarius, the piece represents a small Roman silver denomination valued at half a denarius. Originally created in 211 BC and subsequently reintroduced in 101 BC to replace the victoriatus, the denomination saw sporadic production until the third century. On this issue, the reverse design depicts a galley, shown facing left or right and occasionally featuring a mast or rowers, accompanied by the inscription VIRTVS AVG.
