Historical context

This coin was issued under the authority of Allectus during the Roman imperial period. It was produced at the mint of Camulodunum, bearing his imperial title with the obverse inscription "IMP C ALLECTVS P F AVG".

The antoninianus was introduced by Caracalla in early 215 AD and was a denomination thought to have been valued at two denarii. Characterised by the radiate crown, it was originally silver but underwent progressive debasement across the third century as successive soldier emperors and usurpers required coin to pay their troops and secure loyalty. On this issue, the reverse depicts Laetitia accompanied by the legend "LAETIT AVG".
