Historical context

During the period of the Roman Empire, the ruler Allectus issued coinage struck at the mint of Camulodunum. His coinage appeared towards the end of the third century, amidst a broader monetary landscape shaped by soldier emperors and usurpers who produced issues across imperial and regional mint facilities.

The antoninianus was a denomination introduced by Caracalla in early 215 AD, thought to have been valued at two denarii. Characterised on male portraits by a radiate crown signifying a double denomination, it was originally silver but underwent progressive debasement down to bronze with minimal silver content as supplies dwindled and inflation mounted. On this piece, the obverse bears the portrait of Allectus with the legend "IMP C ALLECTVS P F AVG", while the reverse displays Moneta draped and holding scales alongside a cornucopiae, paired with the legend "MONETA AVG". The denomination ceased to be used by the end of the third century following monetary reforms.
