Historical context

This silver coin was issued under the authority of Allectus during the Roman imperial period. It was struck at the mint of Camulodunum, carrying the obverse legend "IMP C ALLECTVS P F I AVG".

Introduced in early 215 AD by Caracalla, the antoninianus was a Roman denomination thought to have been valued at two denarii. It was identified by the radiate crown worn by the emperor, which signified that the piece was a double denomination. Although initially minted in silver, the denomination suffered from progressive debasement as the Roman Empire faced shortages of silver bullion, driven by an absence of newly conquered territory and exhausted mines. A succession of soldier emperors and usurpers required coinage to pay soldiers and secure their loyalty. By the late third century AD, antoniniani were produced in vast numbers and eventually ceased to be used following monetary reforms.
