Historical context
Aurelian ruled the Roman Empire from 270 to 275 during the Crisis of the Third Century, having been chosen emperor by the Illyriciani. His reign saw military victories reuniting the empire, as well as monetary reforms attempting to curb currency devaluation. Among his measures was an increase to the average weight of the antoninianus in 271.
Struck at Mediolanum, this silver antoninianus belonged to a denomination first introduced by Caracalla in 215, thought to have been valued at two denarii. Characterised by the radiate bust of the emperor indicating a double denomination, it carried the obverse legend "IMP AVRELIANVS AVG". The reverse depicts a genius holding a patera and cornucopiae beside an ensign, accompanied by the inscription "GENIVS ILLV".
