Historical context

Aurelian reigned as Roman emperor from 270 to 275 during the Crisis of the Third Century, taking power after the brief rule of Quintillus. Chosen by the Illyriciani, he secured military victories against groups including the Alamanni, Goths, and Vandals, and reunited the Roman Empire by conquering the Palmyrene and Gallic empires. His domestic actions included constructing the Aurelian Walls and enacting monetary reforms to address currency devaluation.

This antoninianus was produced at the Mediolanum mint. Originally introduced by Caracalla as a double denomination valued at two denarii, the coin was traditionally distinguished by the radiate crown worn by the emperor. In 271, Aurelian temporarily increased the average weight of the denomination. On this issue, the obverse bears the emperor's portrait and titles as "IMP AVRELIANVS AVG", while the reverse depicts Aurelian and Concordia clasping hands alongside the legend "CONCORDIA MILITVM".
