Historical context

Aurelian ruled as Roman emperor from 270 to 275 during the Crisis of the Third Century. After taking the empire following the brief reign of Quintillus, he secured a series of military victories that reunited the Roman Empire. Alongside his campaigns, Aurelian undertook monetary reforms that attempted to curb the ongoing devaluation of Roman currency.

This antoninianus was produced at the mint of Mediolanum. Originally introduced under Caracalla as a double denomination valued at two denarii, the antoninianus had suffered progressive debasement before Aurelian temporarily increased its average weight in 271 AD. Bearing the obverse legend "IMP AVRELIANVS AVG", the issue presents a reverse depicting Felicitas holding a patera and caduceus beside an altar, paired with the legend "FELIC SAECVLI".
