Historical context

Aurelian reigned as Roman emperor from 270 to 275 during the Crisis of the Third Century, having been chosen by the Illyriciani after rising through the military. In addition to his military achievements, he instituted monetary reforms to curb currency devaluation. This gold aureus, the standard imperial gold denomination first established in the late Republic and early Empire, was produced at the mint of Siscia.
