Historical context

Aurelian ruled as Roman emperor from 270 to 275 during the Crisis of the Third Century, having been chosen by the Illyriciani. During his reign, he secured military victories against barbarian groups and reunited the Roman Empire by conquering the Palmyrene and Gallic empires. His administration was also marked by monetary reforms that attempted to curb the devaluation of the Roman currency.

Produced at the mint of Siscia, this silver antoninianus represents a denomination introduced by Caracalla in 215, thought to have been valued at two denarii. The coin features the radiate bust of the emperor alongside the obverse legend "IMP AVRELIANVS AVG", with the radiate crown conventionally indicating a double denomination. The reverse depicts Aurelian clasping hands with Concordia, accompanied by the inscription "CONCORDIA MILITVM" or "CONCORDIA MILI".
