Historical context
Aurelian ruled the Roman Empire from 270 to 275 during the Crisis of the Third Century, having been chosen emperor by the Illyriciani. His reign saw significant military campaigns that reunited the empire, alongside monetary reforms intended to curb the severe devaluation of Roman currency.
This silver antoninianus was minted at Siscia. First introduced by Caracalla in 215 as a double denomination valued at two denarii, the antoninianus typically featured the emperor wearing a radiate crown. In 271, Aurelian temporarily increased the average weight of the denomination. Bearing the obverse legend "IMP AVRELIANVS AVG", the reverse shows the emperor receiving a globe from Jupiter, accompanied by the inscription "IOVI CONSER".
