Historical context

Aurelian reigned as Roman emperor from 270 to 275 during the Crisis of the Third Century, having been chosen by the Illyriciani. Facing severe economic instability, Aurelian enacted monetary reforms attempting to curb the devaluation of the Roman currency.

Struck at Siscia, this silver coin is an antoninianus, a denomination introduced under Caracalla in 215 and thought to have been valued at two denarii. The radiate crown worn by the emperor denoted this double denomination. Introduced amid persistent inflation and progressive debasement throughout the third century, these coins were extensively used by soldier emperors to pay their troops. The obverse carries the title "IMP C AVRELIANVS AVG", while the reverse depicts Aurelian clasping hands with Concordia alongside the legend "CONCORDIA MILITVM".
