Antoninianus in silver struck at Serdica under Aurelian, AD 270–AD 275, catalogued as RIC V Aurelian 260. Obverse: Bust of Aurelian, radiate, draped, right or bust of Aurelian, radiate, cuirassed, right or bust of Aurelian, helmeted, radiate, cuirassed, left, holding spear in right hand and shield in left hand or bust of Aurelian, radiate, cuirassed, left, holding spear in right hand and shield in left hand.

Reverse: Aurelian, standing right, holding sceptre, receiving globe from Jupiter, standing left, holding sceptre. Obverse legend: IMP AVRELIANVS AVG. Reverse legend: IOVI CONSER or IOVI CONSERV.

Historical context

Aurelian was Roman emperor from 270 to 275 during the Crisis of the Third Century, winning an unprecedented series of military victories that reunited the Roman Empire and earned him the title Restitutor Orbis. His reign involved monetary reforms intended to curb the ongoing devaluation of the Roman currency. The antoninianus, originally introduced by Caracalla in 215 AD as a silver double denomination, had steadily declined in silver content over the third century. Aurelian intervened in 271 AD by temporarily increasing the average weight of the denomination. This issue was struck between AD 270 and AD 275 at Serdica, an ancient city conquered by the Roman Republic in 29 BC.
