Historical context

Aurelian ruled the Roman Empire from 270 to 275 during the Crisis of the Third Century. In Rome, Aurelian oversaw the construction of city walls and enacted monetary reforms intended to counter the devaluation of Roman currency.

This antoninianus was produced at the Rome mint. Introduced under Caracalla as a silver coin valued at two denarii, the denomination traditionally featured the ruler with a radiate crown, indicating a double denomination. By the third century, the coinage had undergone debasement, prompting Aurelian to carry out reforms to adjust its standards. The reverse portrays Fortuna holding a rudder and cornucopiae, accompanied by the inscription "FORTVNA REDVX", while the obverse presents Aurelian as "IMP C L DOM AVRELIANVS AVG".
