Historical context

Struck at the mint of Cyzicus, this silver antoninianus belongs to a denomination introduced by Caracalla in 215, traditionally distinguished by the radiate bust of the emperor and valued at two denarii. The reverse design depicts Victory presenting a wreath to Aurelian alongside the legend "RESTITVTOR ORBIS". This legend quotes the honour bestowed upon Aurelian, "Restorer of the World", granted for his success in restoring the territorial integrity of the Roman Empire.
