Historical context

Aurelian ruled as Roman emperor from 270 to 275 during the Crisis of the Third Century, having been chosen by the Illyriciani. His reign saw monetary reforms designed to curb the devaluation of Roman currency, as well as the construction of the Aurelian Walls in Rome.

Struck at the mint of Rome, this silver denarius carries the obverse legend "IMP AVRELIANVS AVG". Although the denarius had ceased to be the standard silver coin after the reign of Gordian III, having been gradually replaced by the antoninianus, small issues continued to be struck. The reverse displays the legend "VICTORIA AVG" alongside Victory holding a wreath and palm branch with a captive at her feet, evoking Aurelian's military triumphs.
