Antoninianus in silver struck at Lugdunum under Carus, AD 282–AD 283, catalogued as RIC V Carus 13. Obverse: Bust of Carus, radiate, draped, right, or bust of Carus, radiate, sometimes helmeted, cuirassed, right.

Reverse: Pax, draped, standing left, holding olive-branch in right hand and sceptre in left hand. Obverse legend: IMP C M AVR CARVS AVG. Reverse legend: PAX AVGG.

Historical context

Marcus Aurelius Carus ruled as Roman emperor from 282 to 283, campaigning successfully along the Danube frontier against Germanic tribes and Sarmatians before dying during an expedition against the Sassanid Empire. This antoninianus was produced at the mint of Lugdunum, modern Lyon, which served as the capital of the Roman province of Gallia Lugdunensis. Originating as a double-denomination coin created under Caracalla in 215 AD, the antoninianus had suffered extensive debasement by the late third century as successive soldier emperors sought coin to pay and secure the allegiance of their armies.
