Historical context
Carus was Roman emperor from 282 to 283, establishing a short-lived dynasty by appointing his sons to imperial office before dying on campaign against the Sassanid Empire. His eldest son, Carinus, was named Caesar in late 282 and served as co-emperor in the western half of the empire before succeeding to rule as Augustus until 285. This antoninianus was struck at Lugdunum under Carus, presenting Carinus in his subordinate imperial role.
